Idiopathic epilepsy is a type of seizure disorder that occurs in people who have no identifiable cause for their seizures. The word “idio” means “of unknown origin,” and “pathic” refers to the condition or disease itself, so idiopathic epilepsy literally translates to "epilepsy of unknown origin." In other words, it is a type of epilepsy that arises spontaneously without any known cause such as brain injury, genetic mutation, or exposure to certain chemicals. It is the most common form of epilepsy and affects about 25% of all people with seizures.
